Why a Compliant Sign Matters
A sign that looks ADA is not the same as a sign that passes inspection. Many low-cost signs sold on Amazon and other marketplace sites are flat-printed, use the wrong braille, or have a glossy face, and in California an inspector or plaintiff's attorney will measure every one.
What a compliant tactile sign must have (2010 ADA Standards / CBC 11B-703): raised uppercase sans-serif characters at least 1/32" high (11B-703.2); contracted Grade 2 braille (11B-703.3); a non-glare, high-contrast face (11B-703.5); and correct mounting, 48" minimum to the baseline of the lowest tactile character and 60" maximum to the highest (11B-703.4).
California requirements most online sellers miss: restroom door geometric symbols, 1/4" thick and 12", centered 58-60" above the floor (11B-703.7.2.6); a parking tow-away sign at least 17" x 22" with 1" letters (11B-502.8); and reflectorized accessible stall signs with 'Minimum Fine $250' and 'Van Accessible' where required (11B-502.6).
The real cost of cheap: a failed sign means a failed final inspection, a re-order and re-installation, and possible lawsuit exposure under California Civil Code section 52.
